About this work
Chemin de fer au bord de la mer, soleil couchant - 1955 shows a railway track running along a coast. The sea meets the sky in a flat band of warm light. Nicolas de Stael painted the track with thick brushstrokes that press into the surface. The marks run straight across the sheet.
The fine art print uses a matte paper that keeps the sunset tones soft and stops the surface from shining under a lamp. A dark frame on a pale wall makes the warm band read clearly.
It fits a study above a desk. From the desk chair you see the long track shape and the quiet sea line.
