About this work
Composition - 1949 shows stacked planes of muted tone on the sheet. A dark block rests beside a lighter one, and the shapes press against each other without a clear line. Nicolas de Stael worked in this way, building forms from weight and colour rather than drawing out a scene.
A white fine art frame gives the image a clean border on the wall. The white edge keeps the heavier tones from spreading outward and holds the stacked planes inside their space.
In a dining room, the darker block reads first from the side door, and the lighter plane shows when you stand by the table. The white frame stays quiet against the tiles.
