Composition grise et rouge - 1964 shows grey and red shapes arranged in layers. The grey tones sit softly over the red forms, and the marks stay close together. Serge Poliakoff built many paintings this way, with stacked planes and a narrow range of tones.

This fine art print keeps the grey quiet and lets the red stay warm on paper. The finish is matte, so the colours do not shine under a lamp.

On a hallway wall beside a coat rack, the grey shapes settle against the paint and the red marks catch the light from the front door. From the stairs you see the big grey forms first, then the smaller red lines near the floor.
