About this work
Construction for Noble Ladies 1919 reads as a paper collage with torn fragments and small geometric pieces stacked over each other. Kurt Schwitters built his work from found paper, bits of printed text and plain painted sheets.
The surface holds a mix of pale tones, rough edges and small marks of glue. From a doorway you notice the layered shapes first, then the small cuts between them.
A white frame gives the edge a clean stop against the rough paper layers. The fine art print keeps the matte surface, so the pale tones stay soft under a ceiling light. In a kitchen along a side wall, the stacked forms sit above the counter and the small cuts between them stay visible from the table.
