Deep Sun by Helen Frankenthaler (1983)

A horizon tilts beneath molten light. Deep Sun, painted in 1983, refuses the sky its usual blue. Frankenthaler pours cadmium yellow into a pool of burnt sienna, letting the edges bleed into mauve and slate. The lower third holds a streak of ochre that could be earth or water—no brushstrokes betray the decision. Above, a single horizontal line of cobalt anchors the glow, as if the sun has paused mid-dip. Hang it where afternoon light lingers; the print turns the wall into a quiet furnace.
