About this work
Design for the Church of St. Jacob sets black grid lines across a white ground with small blocks of red, blue and yellow. Piet Mondrian planned the church in this way during his later practice. The drawing keeps the straight edges and balanced layout he used for his architectural ideas.
The fine art frame comes in white, wood, dark wood or black. A white frame keeps the black lines sharp against the paper, while a dark wood frame gives the edge a steady weight on the wall.
In a narrow hallway with a single bulb overhead, you notice the grid first, then the small colour blocks. The black lines stay clear from the doorway, and the colour squares hold their place on the plaster.
