About this work
Three broad bands of black, white and red run across the paper in Development in Rose I 1952 by Anni Albers. The black field is solid at the top and breaks into shorter strokes lower down. White and red shapes sit between the dark lines. The layout reads as a study in order and contrast.
The fine art frame can be light on a dark wall or dark on a pale wall, so the frame finish follows the room. A wood frame beside wooden furniture keeps the picture steady. The matte surface holds the hard edges without a shine under a lamp.
On a hallway wall near the stairs the big bands read first, then the smaller marks come into view as you pass. The red shape stops the eye and the dark lines lead the way forward.
