Firebox by Gene Davis (1964)

Fifty-three vertical stripes ignite the canvas. Gene Davis titled this painting Firebox, and the name fits—flames of cadmium red, lemon yellow, and sapphire blue stand edge to edge without a single gap. The stripes are all the same width, yet they refuse to repeat. Davis nudges each hue a fraction darker or lighter, so the columns hum rather than march. A single stripe of black anchors the left side, grounding the heat. No brushwork is visible; the colors look poured straight from the tube. Hang it above a low credenza where the stripes can stretch floor to ceiling, or let it float in a narrow hallway like a corridor of light.
