Flamingo by Gene Davis (1965)

Fifty-two vertical stripes, each a different width, march across the canvas. Flamingo is their name, though no bird appears here—only color in formation. Hot pink nudges against lime, while cobalt and ochre hold the center. The stripes never touch, yet they lean into one another, creating a shimmer at the edges. Davis called this optical buzz a ‘solar beat,’ a pulse you feel before you see it. Hang it where morning light slants through a hallway, and the wall itself seems to hum.
