Flying Rectangles by Robert Goodnough (1969)

Rectangles hover above a pale ground. Goodnough’s *Flying Rectangles* from 1969 does exactly what the title promises. Slate-gray and ochre blocks tilt at slight angles, their edges softened by thin white borders. A single cobalt bar cuts diagonally across the top, anchoring the composition. The matte background reads as sky, though no horizon is visible. Hang it where morning light spills across the wall—above a low credenza or beside a tall window frame.
