About this work
For Pearl - 1970 by Brice Marden rests on a plain field with a drawn line and a narrow painted band. The line is made by hand and shows the pressure of the tool.
The band is flat and holds a single tone. Brice Marden worked with drawing and painting in this period, often using oil stick and wax on paper.
A fine art print set in a frame with a back panel carries the drawing as it is. The matte surface keeps the drawn line and the painted band soft, so the line does not turn bright under a lamp. You notice the drawn line first when you stand at the foot of the stairs, and the painted band later when you pass the landing.
