About this work
Fragments I VII 1998 holds a few soft drawn shapes set against a quiet ground. The eye settles on the central marks, then moves to the empty space beside them. Robert Mangold often worked with measured lines and plain colour fields, letting the drawing stay calm and uncluttered.
The object is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel, and the flat surface lets the grey tones keep their soft edge. The frame holds the sheet steady, so the drawn shapes do not pull the eye away from the centre.
On a bedroom wall near the bed, the big shapes read from the doorway and the pencil marks come into view as you pass. The light in the room makes the empty band beside the marks feel open.
