About this work
Frozen Summer - 1966 opens on a field of rough painted marks set against a pale ground. The title points to a warm season held in a cold pause. Norman Bluhm built this kind of surface with broad brushwork and layered paint.
The finish is a fine art print on matte paper, so the pale areas stay flat and the painted marks do not shine under a lamp. A light frame on a dark wall makes the grey ground stand out, and a wood frame beside wooden furniture ties the piece to the room.
It works above the desk in a study, where the big painted forms read from the door and the smaller marks show when you sit down. The room stays calm, and the cold title meets the warm paint on the wall.
