About this work
Gates of Paradise - 1980 shows hard colour squares set against a pale ground. The blocky shapes step across the sheet without blending into one another. Miriam Schapiro built this picture from separate painted pieces rather than one block of paint. Across the room the squares read as a tidy grid.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. The print arrives ready to hang with a metal hanger on the back that goes straight onto a nail or screw. No separate frame is needed. The matte paper keeps the pale sections soft and stops a lamp from throwing a shine on the painted marks.
On a bedroom wall the squares sit above the bed. From the doorway the grid reads as a steady pattern. Standing near the chair you notice the small breaks where the painted pieces meet.
