About this work
Grid #8 - 1969 by Thomas Downing sets a square of evenly spaced marks on a pale ground. Each mark sits the same distance from the next, so the page reads as a measured field rather than a drawing of something. The work stays with the idea of a grid, where order is the main thing you notice.
A fine art print keeps those even intervals clear. The frame finish can follow the room, a light frame on a dark wall or a dark frame on a pale wall. The surface stays matte, so the gaps between the marks do not catch a lamp.
Hang it on a hallway wall where you pass it each day. From the doorway the repeated marks line up into one steady band. Step closer and the small spaces between them come into view.
