About this work
Han Shan Exit - 1992 is a work on paper with a quiet field and a few thin drawn lines. The lines sit close together and move in one direction.
The drawing belongs to the minimalist painting tradition that Brice Marden worked in for many years. Beeswax and pigment on paper were common materials in his practice.
The paper has a matte finish so the grey tones stay even and there is no shine under a lamp. A metal hanger is fitted to the back and goes straight onto a nail or screw, so this fine art print goes up without a separate frame. In a hallway with a single bulb overhead the viewer notices the even grey tone first, then the thin lines step by step as they walk past.
