About this work
Harbinger - 1986 by Helen Frankenthaler sets painted colour against a thin ground. Broad washes spread across the sheet with edges that stay open. The eye moves from one field to the next without a hard line holding it together.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. A white frame gives the picture a clear edge on the wall. The clean border keeps the washed areas from spilling past the paper, so the spaces between the colours read as part of the work.
On a dining room wall the broad colour fields settle into the room at a distance. Standing closer you notice the thin painted edges and the way the ground shows through. The image reads as a quiet arrangement of colour.
