About this work
High Waters by Isaac Levitan (1887)
A swollen river fills the canvas in High Waters. Isaac Levitan's mastery of light and reflection is on full display. Nearly half the painting is dedicated to the river's mirror-like surface, reflecting the expanse of overcast sky. A lone figure navigates a small boat near the riverbank, while a row of humble buildings nestles amidst verdant growth. The static horizontal bands of land, water, and sky are offset by the lively, undulating riverbank. A cool palette of greens, blues, and soft grays dominates the scene. Levitan's crosshatching and loose brushstrokes bring depth to the flat landscape. This poster suits a wall with ample natural light, where the nuances of the brushwork can be fully appreciated.
