Horizontal Band — Fine Art

Horizontal Band shows a flat shape laid across the picture. The work uses clear edges and a single tone to let the rectangle read as a solid form.

Ellsworth Kelly worked with colour planes and hard lines, and this fine art print follows that way of making a picture from shape and tone. The substrate holds the flat tone without shine, so the edge of the band stays clean under a lamp.

A dark frame on a pale wall keeps the rectangle in view. It sits on the stair landing wall, where you notice the straight top line from the steps and the steady tone stays the same at every turn.
