About this work
Houses at Ceret shows a row of crooked buildings painted with the fast, heavy brushwork of Chaim Soutine. The colours are muted and the paint sits thick, with strokes that cross over each other. The marks feel worked and uneven, as if each wall was laid down in a hurry.
The frame in white, wood, dark wood or black gives Houses at Ceret a clear edge on the wall. The fine art frame keeps the painted edges from fading into the room and lets the rough strokes sit plainly around the border.
In a hallway with a low light, the crooked roofs and thick paint stand out where the floor meets the wall. You see the crossed strokes and the uneven tones without anything else drawing the eye.
