About this work

Kweilin Dreaming by Pat Steir (1989)

A waterfall of ink descends in Kweilin Dreaming. This is not a landscape, but a meditation on verticality and fluidity, where the canvas becomes a space for gravity and chance to collaborate. The title suggests a dream, a memory, or perhaps a longing, but the image itself is resolutely abstract, a play of dark and light, movement and stillness. The painting is dominated by a cascade of black paint, thin and watery, that flows downward from the top of the canvas. The background is a pale, almost translucent field, which allows the black paint to appear as if it is suspended in mid-air. The paint splatters and drips, creating a sense of rhythm and movement, as if the waterfall is caught in a moment of time. This poster would suit a study or library, where the quiet contemplation of the image can be appreciated. It would also work well in a modern, minimalist space, where its simplicity and elegance can be fully appreciated.
