About this work
Large Abstract Still Life, 1951- by Helen Frankenthaler works with broad colour fields and thin washes on a flat ground. The painted shapes spread without hard borders, a soak stain method letting pigment sink into the paper. Helen Frankenthaler often used this open approach in her abstract colour field painting.
You get the fine art print with a hanger already on the back. The white frame gives the picture a clean edge on the wall, so the broad painted field stays clear from a distance. The black frame darkens the edge and makes the soft washes read as a single field.
It works above a plain hallway wall at eye level, where the broad colour and thin wash stay visible from the doorway. From a few steps back the open field holds together, up close the small poured edges show.
