About this work
Large Trees at Jas de Bouffan places two tall trees over a cleared ground. The trunks rise with short separate strokes and the leaves break into patches of green and brown. The artist worked in the late nineteenth century, when painters built form from repeated marks instead of smooth blending.
A fine art print on matte paper keeps those rough patches from shining under a lamp. The frame finish can follow the room, a light frame on a dark wall or a wood frame beside wooden furniture. The paper stays flat and the small marks stay visible.
On a hallway wall near the stairs, the trunks guide the eye upward and the ground patches settle the lower part. From the landing you see the big tree shapes first, then the separate strokes as you pass by.
