About this work
Les rochers rouges - 1894 shows a rocky slope painted in warm reds and browns, a subject Armand Guillaumin returned to in his later landscape work. The colours sit close together and the brushwork reads rough and direct. You see the stone shapes before the sky above them.
This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The matte face keeps the red tones flat and dull, so the paint never looks glossy under bright light. The frame gives the picture a solid edge and the back panel lets you hang it straight without asking for help.
It fits a stairwell landing where the light changes through the day. From the bottom step you notice the red band across the middle, and from the top you see how the shapes stack one behind the other.
