About this work
Lost in Translation - 2004 shows painted cell shapes built from hard edges and flat colour. Peter Halley uses this cell and prison layout as a steady part of his practice, laying paint in separate zones that meet at clean borders.
This fine art print keeps those edges sharp on the wall. A white frame gives the image a clean border and leaves the painted blocks without a competing tone around them. The frame sits tight against the picture so the divisions between cells stay clear.
In a narrow hallway the stacked units stretch along the plaster and the white border keeps the shapes from bleeding into the paint on the walls. From the front door you see the hard divisions first, then the flat colour inside each cell.
