About this work
Machine Motorisee 1933 by Alexander Calder places a machine on the page as a drawing. Gears and shafts appear in thin black ink over a plain ground. The work belongs to the artist kinetic sculpture practice, where moving parts became drawings. You can see the same idea here in a static form.
This fine art piece uses a matte paper that holds the ink without shine. The light lets the black lines read clearly against the white paper. A dark frame fits beside dark furniture, or a light frame sits on a pale wall.
It hangs in a study above a desk. The gears draw the eye while you work. You notice the small ink strokes first, then the larger wheel shapes.
