About this work
Menschensohn 2009 by Sigmar Polke uses a mottled field of colour with hazy patches that look like a face seen through fog. The painting sits in the postwar German painting tradition, where uneven colour sits over a ground without hard outlines.
The fine art frame comes in white, wood, dark wood or black. A white frame gives this image a clear edge on the wall, and the frame edge keeps the hazy colour patches from running into the wall. The matte paper holds the soft grey and brown tones without shine under a lamp.
On a stair landing wall, you notice the blurred head shape first, then the small mottled patches up close. The light from a hall window falls on the print and the white frame keeps the picture set apart from the plaster.
