About this work
Merzbau Seen From the Outside 1933 shows a jumble of slopes and stuck shapes packed into a tight rough space. The eye enters at the odd opening in the middle and stops on the stacked lines.
You get the fine art print with a hanger already on the back. Kurt Schwitters built his work by pasting and piling found pieces together. The black frame gives the picture a hard edge on the wall and keeps the busy surface from spreading out.
You see the frame line first, then the uneven forms inside it. It works well on a narrow corridor wall near a coat hook. From the doorway you catch the dark line at the top and the small shapes dropping down.
