About this work
Milkwood Arcade, 1963- by Helen Frankenthaler opens on a pale ground with colour laid in broad areas. The marks spread without hard borders and the paint sinks into the sheet. This soak stain method lets the field hold its own shape on the paper.
The fine art print sits on matte paper so the pale tones stay even under a lamp and the colour does not glare. A light frame on a dark wall lets the open field read clearly from across the hall.
It works above a low bench in a quiet hallway. From the doorway the big colour field reads as one soft shape. Up close the thin edges of the wash become visible.
