About this work
The surface of Morte eau - 1954 holds thin lines that cross over soft washes of pigment. A few darker marks sit near the middle, and the rest of the sheet stays open. The title points toward water and a hush. Alfred Manessier worked with ink and paint in this post war french painting mode.
This fine art print uses a matte paper so the pale tones do not glare under a bulb. A frame finish can follow the room, a light frame against a dark wall or a wood frame beside wooden furniture.
In a bedroom, the thin lines read first from the doorway, then the soft washes show when you stand closer. On a pale wall the darker marks settle into the room, and the open sheet keeps the space calm.
