About this work
Motion - 1962 shows a field of repeated colour shapes that lean and shift across the sheet. Ernst Wilhelm Nay built much of his abstract work on layered brushstrokes and quick marks. The colours stay separate but read as one moving band. You can see the rhythm in the spacing between each shape.
This fine art print sits in a frame with a back panel. The paper stays flat and matte, so the colour patches read plainly and the light stays even. You get the full shape of each mark without any shine on the surface.
In a kitchen corner above the counter you notice the larger shape first, then the smaller strokes lower down. The repeated band of colour breaks up the plain wall and keeps the eye moving along the line.
