Mt. Chocorua No. 1

Mt. Chocorua No. 1 - 1926 shows a mountain outline built from quick pencil sweeps.

The drawing keeps the ridge line rough and the sky plain. From across the room the shape stands out as a single mass, while near it the scattered strokes become visible. John Marin worked with charcoal and watercolour in this period, and the method leaves the paper tone in the open parts.

This fine art print is set in a frame with a back panel, so the sheet stays flat and the edges stay covered. On the stairwell wall the print is seen first from the lower landing, where the mountain reads as a dark cut against the pale paper. The same view from the top step shows the pencil grain and the uneven line.
