About this work
A river runs through a town of steep pitched roofs and chimneys in Mystic River 1951. The water spreads across the lower half while buildings stack on the banks with small windows and straight rooflines. Lyonel Feininger built this scene with light washes and drawn lines.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. The print is mounted on matte paper with a clean border, so the thin ink strokes stay readable and the washes do not turn glossy under a ceiling light. A light frame suits a dark wall, or a dark frame works on a pale surface.
In a stairwell landing with one overhead lamp, the river shape reads first and the roof lines follow. From the bottom step you see the water spread flat, and the pencil lines hold their shape without glare.
