About this work
New England, October 1957 by Grace Hartigan shows broad colour bands set side by side on a plain field. A cool blue sits next to a warm red, and the two tones stay separate without blending together. The painted marks are loose and a little uneven at the edges.
The picture comes as a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The paper has a matte finish, so the colours read softly and there is no glare under a lamp. The frame and back panel keep the print flat and ready to hang.
In a dining room, the blue band catches the morning light from a side window, and the red band stays steady in the shadow. From the table you see the two tones and the uneven edges of the painted marks.
