About this work
No.8 - 1952 opens with a soft band of warm tone across the sheet and a darker band below it. The two colour fields sit close in value, and the open space around them keeps the picture quiet. The work follows the colour field painting practice of Mark Rothko.
The fine art print uses a matte paper that keeps those tones even under indoor light. A light frame on a dark wall lets the upper band read first, while a dark frame on a pale wall pulls the eye down to the lower field.
On the landing wall inside a stairwell, the two bands read as two planes of tone. From the bottom step you see the full width, and from the top step the darker band holds the view.
