About this work

Number 30 by Ad Reinhardt (1938)

A grid of small rectangles, each a different shade of blue. Number 30 by Ad Reinhardt, 1938, is a quiet rebellion against empty space. Twenty-four rectangles, six by four, sit flush against a pale ground. The blues range from slate to near-lavender, their edges crisp but not rigid. No brushwork is visible, only the faintest shift in hue where one shape meets another. The whole composition tilts slightly, as if the grid itself is breathing. Hang it where morning light lingers—above a low bookshelf or beside a white doorframe—so the blues can deepen as the room brightens.
