Nine squares, each a shade darker than the last. Reinhardt’s 1958 Painting is a ladder of black descending into itself.
The canvas is divided into three vertical columns, each holding three near-identical squares. The left column leans into blue-black, the center into charcoal, the right into a greenish undertone. Edges are ruler-straight, brushstrokes invisible. What looks like a single hue reveals itself as a spectrum of refusal.
