About this work
Painting on Light Ground 1916 shows a pale surface with marks laid over it by Wassily Kandinsky. A few coloured patches sit near the centre, and thin lines run through them.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. The picture reads as a field of quiet colour with small gestures placed across it. Up close the pencil lines show their direction, from a few steps away the patches hold the eye. The paper is matte, so the pale tones stay soft and there is no shine under a lamp.
A light wood frame can sit beside a wooden bookcase without pulling focus from the picture. A narrow shelf in the kitchen holds the print at a middle height. From the doorway the pale ground reads first, then the small marks come into view.
