About this work
Papercut 1947 by Henri Matisse shows a cut paper shape resting on a plain ground. The single form sits with hard edges against the background.
You get the fine art print with a hanger already on the back. In Matisse late work, paper cutting became a way to make bold shapes in fresh colour. Here the mark reads as a flat silhouette with no brush lines.
The white finish gives the picture a clean edge that holds the cut shape steady on the wall. You notice the hard outline first, then the plain ground behind it. It sits well above a low console where the shape reads clearly from the doorway.
