About this work
Paysage - 1954 by Nicolas de Stael sets broad painted bands of blue and ochre against a lighter ground. The colour patches meet at uneven edges, so each block reads as a separate shape. The ground stays calm while the darker tones gather near the centre.
The fine art frame in white gives the picture a clear edge on the wall. That white line keeps the blue and ochre from fading into the room, and the frame finish stays steady against the painted patches.
On a kitchen wall the blue bands hold the morning light, and from the table you notice the uneven paint edges before you see the whole scene.
