Peinture — Fine Art

The painting called Peinture - Surrealism uses broad sweeping marks that run across the sheet. Simon Hantai folded and pressed the material to leave those lines and soft shifts in tone. The work belongs to his larger practice of working the surface by hand rather than by brush.

The fine art frame comes in white, wood, dark wood or black and gives the picture a clean edge on the wall. A white frame keeps the pale ground open while a dark wood frame weighs down the lower line of the marks.

It hangs on a kitchen wall where morning light catches the folded passages. From the table you notice the uneven width of each line and the paper edge showing through. The shapes stay readable while you wash a cup.
