Helens Frankenthaler Plexus works from the soak stain method she made famous. Thin colour washes soak into the paper ground and leave soft edges. Broad painted areas sit without heavy outline.

The marks stay open and the ground shows through the colour. A fine art print is set in a frame with a back panel. The matte surface keeps the washes flat and there is no shine under a lamp.

You see the soft colour edge first, then the even ground behind it. On a plain hallway wall it reads as a quiet field of wash. From the doorway the big painted areas hold the eye, up close the thin wash shows the paper grain.
