About this work
A broad aircraft silhouette cuts across a pale ground in Recover - 2003. Ralston Crawford painted hard edge shapes from factories and planes. The picture reads as a few flat bands of dark paint laid over a quiet field. The work belongs to the painterly study of industrial shapes that runs through his later practice.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. The white frame gives the image a clean edge on the wall. The bright border keeps the dark shapes from sinking into the room, and the matte surface leaves the paint tones soft under a lamp.
A dining room shelf holds the print near a bookshelf. From the table you see the dark shape at the top and the pale ground below. The white frame edge reads first, then the flat bands sit quiet behind it.
