Red and Black — Fine Art

Red and Black by Sam Francis puts two strong colour shapes on a pale ground. A red field meets a black form, with open space between them. The paint spreads in wide washes that stop hard at the edge of each shape. You see the brushwork where the colour thins out.

This fine art piece uses a white frame that gives the picture a clean border on the wall. The bright finish keeps the red and black marks clear and lets the open gaps read as part of the picture.

Hang it on a kitchen wall near the sink, where morning light hits the red shape first. From the table you notice the hard edge of the black form, and the white space beside it.
