About this work
Red Boat - 1964 shows broad painted colour fields with sharp edges and a few dark marks set against a muted ground. The surface looks worked in layers, with the paint applied in broad strokes and left with visible texture. Robert Goodnough built his paintings this way, laying colour side by side and letting the edges stay hard.
A fine art print set in a frame with a back panel keeps the paint colours steady and the edges clean. The paper sits flat inside the frame, so the layered paint marks read the same from a normal viewing distance.
In a study, the print hangs on a pale wall above a desk. From the chair you see the big colour shapes first, and the dark marks sit quietly in the lower half.
