About this work
Red Travels, 1971- shows a red shape moving across the sheet. The mark looks thin and open, with edges that soften where the paint meets the ground. Helen Frankenthaler often let colour soak into the paper in this way. The red travels across the field without a hard outline.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. The white frame gives the image a clean edge. The white finish keeps the red from feeling boxed in, so the shape can move a little past the frame line. The frame edge stays simple against the flat colour.
You see it best on a plain wall at eye level. From there the red reads as a single moving shape. Step back and the edge softens. Stand close and you notice the open ground around the mark.
