Rhinoceros 3 — Fine Art

Rhinoceros 3 by Sam Gilliam sets a single dark shape on a pale ground. The form reads as an animal outline rather than a full body. Sam Gilliam often worked in the colour field painting practice, laying broad painted areas on canvas.

The image arrives as a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The matte surface keeps the dark shape from shining under a lamp and lets the pale ground stay muted.

On a hallway wall near the stairs, the dark outline stands out against the pale field. From the landing you see the shape of the animal, and the single form holds the space.
