About this work
The title September 2005 points to a vague moment, and the picture keeps that feeling. Gerhard Richter lays down thin bands of grey and blue that run across the sheet, some sharp and some blurred at the edge. The marks do not line up neatly, so the eye keeps moving.
This is a fine art print on matte paper, so the grey tones stay flat and there is no shine under a lamp. The frame gives the picture a clear edge on the wall.
In a study, the print sits above a desk with a lamp on the right. From the chair you see the broad grey bands, and from the doorway the blue line at the right edge catches the light first.
