About this work
Seventh Decade Garden IX X 1970 reads as a late grouping of stacked wooden forms inside a single frame. Louise Nevelson built these pieces from many small painted shapes, pressed together to form one dark block. From the doorway the surface looks smooth and solid.
This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The matte finish keeps the dark tone from reflecting light, so the stacked forms read as one quiet field. The frame sits flat against the wall and the back panel keeps the layers in place.
It sits on the dining room end wall near the table lamp. The lamp throws a soft glow over the dark surface, and the stacked shapes hold their shape without glare. You notice the even tone across the whole block.
