About this work
Shippan October, 1981- by Helen Frankenthaler holds open areas of thin paint laid across the paper. The colours sit in broad bands with soft edges where the wash meets the bare ground. The work belongs to the soak stain painting practice Helen Frankenthaler made her own.
The fine art print uses a matte surface so the pale tones stay even and the open gaps between the bands do not go bright under a lamp. A light frame works on a dark wall, or a dark frame pairs with pale furniture.
On a kitchen wall near the sink, the broad colour bands settle into the busy day. From the table you see the soft edge of one wash meeting the empty paper.
